Asking “is it worth it?” about our own furniture is a bit like asking a barber if you need a haircut. So instead of a verdict, here’s the raw material for your own: real numbers, what they buy, and — because credibility is earned — the cases where we’re the wrong choice.
Who shouldn’t buy a Sixpenny. (Yes, really.)
People who need a sofa this month. Made-to-order pieces take 10–12 weeks. We keep some items ready-to-ship (2–3 weeks), but if your furniture emergency is urgent and specific, a warehouse brand will serve you faster.
Devotees of the taut, structured look. Our slipcovers are relaxed by design and our cushions are genuinely sink-in soft. If you want firm, upright, wrinkle-free precision, you will spend your life fighting this sofa, and it will win.
Anyone who wants zero-maintenance fabric. Our fabrics are uncoated naturals and recycled weaves. They ask for an annual cleaning and occasional fluffing. What “worth it” looks like in practice.
The per-year arithmetic: a $1,200 fast-furniture sofa that lasts six years costs $200 a year and ends in a landfill. A Sixpenny at $2,799 with a lifetime-warrantied frame, amortized over fifteen-plus years — with maybe a replacement slipcover along the way — costs less per year, sits better the whole time, and never becomes bulk trash. The expensive habit isn’t buying good furniture. It’s buying furniture again.
And because the slipcover is replaceable, the usual reason sofas die — ruined fabric — is demoted from “catastrophe” to “shopping trip.”
Where the money goes.
The frame. Kiln-dried hardwood with plywood reinforcement, corner blocking, webbing-and-sinuous-spring suspension. This is the boring, invisible part — and the reason we can offer a Limited Lifetime Warranty on frames, springs, joints, legs, and hardware. Cheap sofas economize exactly here, because you can’t see it in a product photo. You can hear it, though, around year four.
The materials. French flax linen, American and Austrian oak, ethically sourced feather down, full-grain French hides. Natural materials cost multiples of their synthetic impersonators, for reasons we’ve written about at length (see: “Why is linen furniture expensive?”). Order Swatches here.
The tailoring. Every slipcover is cut and sewn for its specific frame by production partners we’ve worked with for years — one of which we own outright. Handcraft is slow. Slow is expensive. Expensive, in this one case, is the point.
What you’re not paying for. We design, manufacture, and sell directly — no wholesalers, no showroom markups, no retail middlemen. Traditional furniture retail inflates the price of a piece by as much as six times over its production cost. Our margin covers one company, not a supply chain of them.
